In a groundbreaking verdict, Attorney Michael R. Fox secured $5.4 million in damages for his client, Scott Lawson in March of 1999. A federal jury awarded Lawson $5.4 million in damages, due to the hardships he suffered during his time in the Monroe County jail.

Lawson, who was mentally ill with schizophrenia, was arrested and charged for carrying a concealed weapon, and was denied being able to post a $500 bond. During his ten-month duration in the Monroe County jail, Lawson was denied medication for his schizophrenia, and forced to spend 65 days in solitary confinement. His cell was habitually dark for 24 hours.
